Chamomile.

🌼 Why Chamomile Helps with Sleep

Chamomile, particularly German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), contains apigenin, a flavonoid that may:

Bind to GABA-A receptors in the brain. Thus, may promote sedative and anti-anxiety like effects. Chamomile is gentle but helps to calm the nervous system in children and adults. This makes chamomile a gentle sleep aid for people experiencing: mild insomnia, sleep related issues, and restlessness at night.

Milky Oats Straw & Tops.

Milky oats is one of my favorite herbs in my garden and in my apothecary.

Milky oats are an often over looked herbal nervine. Probably, because milky oats do not sedate the central nervous system such as valerian or passionflower would. Instead, they work gently and gradually to restore balance to a "depleted" or "overtaxed" nervous system. They’re ideal if your sleep problems stem from:

Chronic stress or burnout
Nervous exhaustion
Emotional upheaval or grief
Overstimulation (e.g. from screens, work, constant pressure)

Passionflower.

Passionflower contains alkaloids, and flavonoids that have shown sedative like effects making passionflower beneficial to those suffering from emotional or physical trauma.

Passionflower does have an affinity to the central nervous system, and has depressant-like effects, making passionflower beneficial when dealing with sudden loss of a family member, or loved one.

Passionflower also contains constituents that are antiinflammatory and antispasmodic, thus indicating passionflower may help soothe and support inflammed, cramping, muscles.

Skullcap.

Skullcap has been used traditionally for centuries to promote rest, relaxation, and tone to the central nervous system.

Why Skullcap Helps with Sleep
Skullcap acts on the central nervous system and has both:

Calming effects for acute stress
Tonic effects with long-term use (nourishing and rebuilding the nervous system)
Best for people who:

Struggle to "shut off" the mind at night
Feel wired but exhausted
Experience tension, twitchiness, or mild tremors
Wake up frequently due to nervous energy

Rose

🌹 Rose (especially Rosa damascena or Rosa centifolia) might not be the first herb that comes to mind for sleep, but it’s actually a beautiful and effective gentle sedative, especially when emotional unrestgrief, or heartache are part of the picture.

🌙 Why Rose Helps with Sleep

Rose is considered a nervine and mood soother in herbal medicine. It's not a strong sedative like valerian or skullcap, but it can support relaxation, emotional balance, and a sense of comfort that eases the transition into sleep.

Best for people who:

  • Can’t sleep due to emotional tension
  • Feel lonely, heartbroken, or anxious
  • Want to calm their heart and mind without heavy sedation
