allantoin
Cultivated since 400 B.C. and once called "knitbone", or "boneset", for it's ability to heal broken bones.
Greeks and Romans used comfrey poultices to soothe inflammation and pain.
Comfrey roots and leaves contain a constituent called allantoin. This constituent may be responsbile for promoting new skin tissue growth, soothing inflammation, and nourishing dry, damaged, skin.
"the bandaid plant"
Native Americans across North America embraced this introduced plant as a cure-all medicine. The plant was used as a poultice to treat painful bruises, rheumatism and headaches.
In Europe, this plant was called “the bandaid plant,” because it was used to treat wounds and bruises. Applied over wounds, it can quickly stop bleeding and encourages the repair of damaged tissue. One of the many constituents this herb contains is apigenin, which may explain its anti-inflammatory properties.
It grows abundantly here in East Tennessee, usually popping up like a weed; that most try and get rid of.
not just for flavor
Used medicinally since 1500 B.C.E.
Peppermint has been used medicinally for thousands of years, with records of its use dating back to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. It was used to treat a variety of conditions, including digestive disorders, colds, fever, and headaches.
Peppermint's main compounds, carvone, limonene, and menthol, may be responsible for its analgesic effects. Menthol in particular can soothe pain by increasing the stimulation threshold of cells.
soothing
This beautiful flower has been used medicinally since the 1500's, although Saint Hildegard of Bingen (a visionary mystic and nun born in 1098) did mention the use of arnica in her writings.
Arnica may be one of the best herbs for external ailments such as localized pain, inflammation, to even bruises and sprains.
Studies show that arnica has immunostimulant properties that stimulate phagocytosis, thus, arnica may be benefical to regain tissue homeostasis.
Arnica is not safe to ingest internally.
