Hippocrates claimed that elecampane is stimulating to the kidneys, brain, uterus, and stomach. Which is one of the reasons why modern herbalists do not recommend elecampane to pregnant and nursing mothers.
Nicholas Culpeper, an english physician, botanist, and herbalist, noted that elecampane was benefical to "warm a cold and windy stomach".
By the 19th century The Eclectic Doctor's (Cincinnati) had added it to their materia medica. In 1890 it became apart of the US Pharmacopoeia.
Elecampane may soothe wet, thick phelgm like coughs. Elecampane may work as a natural expectorant by bringing mucus up and out of the respiratory system. Elecampane is also used to stimulate the digestive system. New reserach shows a reoccuring illness may be due to a "sluggish digestive system".

Vodka is often used in tincture making because it is tasteless, and contains no additional ingredients.
